Community Service Organization Jefferson (VA) Ruritan Club’s 2013 Turkey Shoot Raffle prize was revealed during the October 18th Turkey Shoot. The prize consists of three items: a Flextone Buck Commander Rut Hunter Deer Call and a pair of Nikon Aculon A30 10 x 25 binoculars provided by the Jefferson Ruritan Club, and a Blackhawk Specops Stock Gen ii recoil suppression system provided by Warrenton Arms and Outdoors of Warrenton in exchange for publicity of the sponsorship. Raffle tickets are $2 each, and can be purchased at any of the Turkey Shoots, or by contacting the Ruritan Club at jeffersonruritans@gmail.com. The winner of the raffle will be drawn December 20 during that evening’s Turkey Shoot event.

The Ruritan Club was pleased to see a 47% increase of competitors between the October 4th and October 18th Turkey Shoot events. The increased participation is largely credited to increased social media presence of the Jefferson Ruritan Club.

While many of the October 18th patrons were seasoned participants, there were plenty of newcomers as well. The volunteer staff happily welcomed the newcomers, explained the process of the event, and provided guided tours of the premises.

Food prizes awarded throughout the event included: porterhouse steaks, hams, turkey breasts, pork chops, chicken wings, and shrimp.

Door prizes awarded throughout the event included: a $5 gift card donated by Moo Thru of Remington, a $20 gift card from Great Harvest Bread of Warrenton, a certificate for a free breakfast at the next Jefferson Ruritan Club Breakfast Buffet, and $25 cash.

Two “Jackpot” cash rounds were held, with the winner taking 60% of the ticket sales for the round. The first Jackpot prize was $69; the second Jackpot prize was $12.

The concession stand volunteers enjoyed a brisk business selling food to participants, the volunteer staff, and drop-in diners alike.

The Turkey Shoots, held at the Jeffersonton Community Center in Jeffersonton VA, are scheduled to be held every Friday night through December 20th. Target sales begin at 7pm, and the events end at 10pm. A “rain-date make-up” night of January 4, 2014 has been scheduled to accommodate the rained-out date of October 11th.

About the Turkey Shoots:

The Jefferson Ruritan Club has held Turkey Shoots as one of their primary fund-raising events since 1986. Club members volunteer their time to staff the family-friendly Turkey Shoots. Profits from the Turkey Shoots support local charities and the Jeffersonton Community Center.

Targets for food rounds cost $3 for one target, $6 for two targets, $8 for three targets, Jackpot (money) round targets cost $5 per target. Some nights run later than others, but the events are usually over by 10pm. The concession stand closes at 9:30pm.

Opening night of the Jefferson Ruritan 27th Annual Friday Night Turkey Shoots hits the mark

Community Service Organization Jefferson (VA) Ruritan Club members were delighted with the larger than anticipated turnout at the opening night of their 27th Annual Friday Night Turkey Shoots held at the Jeffersonton Community Center last Friday night.

New this year was the requirement for the participants to sign a standard waiver of liability, per the advice of the insurance company. There was no hesitation by any of the participants to sign on the line and get the fun started! Their hands were marked with a permanent marker to signal the volunteers outside that the shooter was clear to participate and there were plenty of good-natured jokes about the ladies behind the target-sales table holding the hand of the shooter while applying the mark of approval.

There were several door prizes awarded through-out the night. New this year to the Turkey Shoots is the addition of door prizes that have been donated by local businesses. The first door prize of the night (drawn half-way through the Turkey Shoot) was a $25 gift card donated to the club by the Warrenton IHOP. When the participants heard that the door prize was from IHOP everyone was quite excited and waited with bated breath to see if they were the lucky winners.

The second door prize, drawn later in the evening, was a free breakfast at the next All-You-Can Eat Country Breakfast Buffet held at the Jeffersonton Community Center every second Saturday of the month. The third door prize, drawn at the end of the event was $25 cash.

Although the majority of the participants were returning competitors from previous seasons there were also new faces in the crowd who had seen the Turkey Shoot story in their local newspaper from the previous weekend.

There were several families that came to the Turkey Shoot with their children, and the children seemed to have a great time playing together for most of the evening. Business at the concession stand was brisk as well, several families (and some of the volunteers from the Little Fork Fire Department) dropped by just to grab a bite to eat.
